Tucked away in the quiet backstreets of Harajuku is Boy Tokyo, the latest addition to legendary hair designer Masayuki Mogi’s boy Inc family. The Harajuku branch features floor length windows, a rooftop garden, and an airy interior where sound, space, and light converge in perfect harmony.
Well-known for their hair cutting method, stylists are adept at incorporating the “Hazushi” technique to suit clients’ personalities. With a salon session comprising of a carbonated water cleansing shampoo and a Wild Yuzu head spa – you don’t want to miss out on this uniquely Japanese haircutting experience!
After a distressing first-time salon experience in Japan left her with limp, flat hair, a model of the day Claire often feels apprehensive about salon visits. Top stylist Yusuke Yoshihiro wants to fix that. Germany-born and US-raised Yoshihiro not only possesses an edgy creativity for hairstyling, but also a keen cultural sensitivity that allows him to skillfully communicate on all things food, music, and of course, hair.
Today, Claire braves a first time visit to Boy Tokyo in hopes for an effortless, shorter hairstyle that will suit her oily-on-top and dry-at-the-tips combo hair type. Following a thorough consultation and a frontal and profile sketch of the recommended style, the model opts for a sparkling scalp cleansing shampoo, medium-length bob cut, and a pampering head spa and foot massage session.
After a sparkling scalp cleansing shampoo and blow dry, Yoshihiro begins the haircut using the “Hazushi” freehand technique, occasionally flicking the hair to check for form. The top stylist prefers dry cuts as it allows him to take into consideration the natural state and movements of his client’s hair. With a few sharp snips, Claire is now the proud owner of a set of trendy, doll-like bangs!
Yoshihiro then texturizes the bangs for face-framing, and lightly layers the inner hairs to create a rounded, voluminous look with more movement.
With the haircut done and dusted, Claire heads over to the fully reclining spa chair to enjoy a revitalizing head spa and leg massage session performed by stylist and masseuse Abe Arisa. A heating pad of shell ginger seeds and leaves is placed under Claire’s calves as Arisa slowly massages her scalp using Argan oil and Wild Yuzu lotion, kneading and gently holding pressure points. The antioxidant rich Argan oil boosts cell production while the Japanese Wild Yuzu contains Fulvic acid which strengthens capillaries and improves blood circulation.
Next, Arisa unties the heating pad and applies pressure to Claire’s legs, working her way from below the knee to the model’s ankles, and then moving to massage the calves. The pampering session concludes with an invigorating, scalp-cleansing shampoo, prepping the model’s hair for drying and styling.
It’s all fun and laughter as Yoshihiro works his styling magic onto Claire’s hair with a flat iron and a touch of 100% Carthame oil. Getting up from the salon chair with shapely curls and soft above-brow bangs, Claire gushes over her chic, new, slightly disheveled medium bob and the feeling of lighter, bouncier hair!
